Taking the Lead: How Three School Districts are Implementing Common Core State Standards

Three real-world implementation case studies

School districts across the country are implementing Common Core State Standards. Along the way, they experience many challenges and find creative solutions to address them. This collection of case studies shows how three school districts are addressing these challenges and what strategies they put in place to support coaches, teachers and students with the difficult shift.

Read the case studies and see what best practices surfaced in all three districts.

This compilation includes the following case studies:

  • Bayfield School District: Taking the Lead in Early Implementation
  • Boone County School District: Taking the Lead in Helping Teachers Handle Initiative Overdrive
  • West Baton Rouge Parish School District: Taking the Lead in Creating Teacher Buy-In

All three districts participated in a series of convenings organized by Unversity of Washington Center for Educational Leadership (CEL) in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that brought together districts from Colorado, Kentucky and Louisiana. At the convenings, districts shared their successes and challenges around implementation and continued work around Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) and Math Design Collaborative (MDC), two teacher-created instructional design systems that support teachers with the implementation of new math and literacy standards.
